Planning your visit to Oak Grove!

We know that visiting a new church for the first time can be intimidating!  Here are some basic things to know before visiting us for worship for the first time!

Welcome!

ALL ARE WELCOME IN THIS PLACE!  There is no rule that requires you must be an existing member, a Lutheran, or even a Christian to visit us for the first time.  Come join us!

Who We Are

Oak Grove is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  Oak Grove was founded in 1873 and has been a presence in New Sewickley Township for 152 years!

Parking and Entrance

When you come to visit us, you may park in the grass anywhere in the rear of the building or off to the sides of the building!  You may either enter the church through the back door, or through the front or side doors; if you're visiting for the first time, it might be easiest for you to go in the front door which leads directly into our sanctuary!  Bathrooms are located downstairs in our social hall.

Dress Code

There is no formal dress code here.  Some people like to dress up for church and wear their "Sunday Best"; others wear T-shirts and jeans.  Come as you are!

Service Time

Our service begins at 9 AM.  Most folks are usually seated by a few minutes before that.  Our Sunday School program for kids between Pre-K through 4th grade, takes place during the worship service and that begins at 8:45 AM.  Sunday School meets downstairs in our Youth Room.  After worship, you are invited to stay for Coffee Hour and Adult Forum downstairs, where we enjoy some pastries, coffee, fellowship, and a brief Bible study!

Worship

Our church worships using services taken from either the Lutheran Book of Worship, or the newer Evangelical Lutheran Worship.  Everything you need to participate in the service is in your bulletin, no hymnals needed!  Our services are fairly traditional and you can expect to hear pipe organ music in the Lutheran tradition.

Communion

We celebrate Holy Communion at nearly every service.  All Christians from all denominational traditions are welcome at our Table!  When it comes time for Communion, come forward by the side aisles, take a cup from the tray at the head of the aisle, and line up across the altar rail.  You'll be handed bread and offered a sip of wine to be poured into your cup, then a basket will come back for you to deposit your cup.  You may then return to your seat by the center aisle.  If anyone visiting is mobility challenged, you can raise your hand after we have finished and I will commune you in your seat.  If you aren't comfortable communing with us, feel free to remain in your seat, or you can come forward with your arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing!
